Levaquin (levofloxacin) belongs to the group of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones and can be prescribed to fight bacteria in the body. Do not use this drug if you are allergic to it or any of its active compounds (for the full list of ingredients please see the label or talk to your pharmacist). If you have ever been allergic to similar antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin, moxifloxacin, ofloxacin, norfloxacin, lomefloxacin, and a number of others, Levaquin is likely to have the same effect on you. Do not take vitamins, minerals or antacids simultaneously with Levaquin – wait for 2 hours to pass between the two medicines. The drugs mentioned above can make Levaquin less efficient therefore affecting your treatment.
Talk to your doctor about your general health condition and any illnesses you have or used to have. Kidney or liver disease, joint problems, epilepsy, seizures, low potassium levels or history of Long QT syndrome may be contraindications or your dosage needs to be adjusted to avoid unpleasant side effects and complications. Avoid taking antacids that contain magnesium or aluminum, ulcer medicine, sucralfate, didanosine, vitamin or mineral supplements that contain iron or zinc, as this may make your medicine less efficient.
